WHEN STARS WERE LEGENDS #2 WESTERNS

RIDE'M COWBOY UR,  COWGIRL!
                                              article by:  James Thomas Fridas

They rode into the lives of all Americans and they were famous as any actor or actress could be, of course the cowboy hero could never kiss the girl only his horse because the kids thought it was mushy!!

They were in the silent movies all the way to the current time only television seems to have forgotten the past.  They were the best of them all and they rode with a vengeance, long live America's cowboys and cowgirls!!

More than likely there will be a dispute as to who was the best of the best, I do know that Hopalong Cassidy was the most famous, while Roy Rogers was known as the King of Cowboys,  Gene Autrey was the first King of Cowboys, he had two side kicks while Roy Rogers had Dale Evens and Gabby Hayes, and later he also had Andy Divine.

Then there was the immortal Tex Ritter followed by Hoot Gibson a famous cowboy, then there was Rex Allen.  Singing cowboys were all the fashion in the early days of cowboy hero's yet there were singing cowgirls to, such as Dorothy Page a cowgirl singer, then there was Peggy Stewart, Jennifer Holt, Gail Davies, Emily Timely and Nell O'Day.

There were other women cowgirls if we can get them in we will, moving on to other famous cowboys there was Tom Mix one of the early western hero's then the was one of my child hood hero's Lash La Rue bull whip will hurt you!!!

Another one of my early day hero's was James Arness who starred in Gun Smoke, there were other hero's of the day like Roudy on Rawhide AKA Clint Eastwood one of the few living legends of the day along with Tom Sellick and Bruce Willis.

Then there were many more who rode the dusty trail, like John Wayne and Glen Ford who were the leading movie makers of westerns.   Funny thing about cowboy stars in their day, they only kissed their horse not the girl!!!  I will add dozens of other famous cowboy stars in my next post!
